Solar energy for Lower Franconia Opening of the Gemünden-Harrbach citizens´ solar park

Iqony Sens masters local conditions and builds a 10 MWp solar park on behalf of SÜDWERK Energie GmbH in Gemünden am Main

After seven months of construction, the Gemünden-Harrbach citizens´ solar park, which was built by Iqony Sens on an area of eight hectares in the southern part of Gemünden am Main, was opened last week.

The client for the project is SÜDWERK Energie GmbH, which is committed to the energy transition in Bavaria and beyond. While Iqony Sens has realised the solar park, SÜDWERK itself has taken on the project development and will operate the plant in future.

"We are delighted to support the town of Gemünden on its way to a sustainable and future-proof energy supply and to give local citizens the opportunity to participate in the local energy transition," said Thomas Jungkunz, project developer at SÜDWERK.

Good Energy for Gemünden

"The Gemünden-Harrbach citizens´ solar park is an example of the successful implementation of the energy transition at a local level. We are proud that we were able to realise this project in collaboration with the town and our partners in such a short space of time," says Fabian Herr, COO at Iqony Sens.

The solar park was built with an installed capacity of 9,984 kWp and will generate 10.3 million kWh of electricity per year. This amount corresponds to the electricity requirements of around 3,000 households, which, with a population of 10,656 in Gemünden, covers a large proportion of the local energy requirements. "The sloping site and the nature of the ground presented us with a number of challenges, but we were able to solve them with the support of the project team. We are delighted that we are contributing to a sustainable energy supply in the region with this solar park together with SÜDWERK ," says Klaus Nüssel, Project Manager Engineering & Project Execution Utility Scale at Iqony Sens.

City promotes renewable energy

The project was made possible by a corresponding amendment to the original land use plan. The reason for this change was again the intention of the town of Gemünden am Main to meet the demand for renewable energy and therefore to provide land for ground-mounted photovoltaic systems. The erection of the photovoltaic system supports the goal of the federal and state governments to increase the proportion of renewable energy in the future energy supply and thus reduce CO2 emissions accordingly.

The exciting thing about this project is that SÜDWERK Energie GmbH, as operator of the solar park, is offering all interested citizens the opportunity to participate financially in the form of share purchases in the community solar park. Information on this can be found at beteiligung.suedwerk.de.
